Hambantota in a nutshell
Hambantota lies on Sri Lanka's south coast in the Southern Province, and the district of the same name takes in most of the places visitors come for. The municipal council area had 26,351 residents in the 2024 census, the district around 671,400. For travelers the town is mainly a starting point: Yala National Park, Bundala, Udawalawe, the temple town of Kataragama, the ancient reservoir town of Tissamaharama and the beaches up to Tangalle are all within a day trip.

It is not run by the municipal council, the district office, the port, the wildlife department or any tour company. Prices are quoted as listed by providers in 2026, and they change.

Yala is the best known park and the one with leopard interest. Bundala is a wetland and bird park, and Udawalawe is built around elephant watching. None of them can promise a particular animal.

Yala reopened after a drought closure
A drought-related partial closure ran from 14 September to 15 October 2026, and day visitors were announced back from 16 October 2026. Reports call the affected areas blocks 1 and 2, or zones 1 and 1A. Park lodges and campsites are listed to become available again from 1 November 2026. This was a closure of 2026, not a fixed annual period.

The tourist ETA is fee-free for 30 days for citizens of 40 listed countries, including Germany, Austria, Switzerland, the UK and the US, from 25 May 2026. It has not been abolished, so apply before you travel.
Getting there →The expressway no longer ends at Matara
Texts that say it stops at Matara are old. An extension toward Hambantota and Mattala opened in February 2020. Toll amounts change, so check the current rates.
Road and rail →Fuel rationing
The German Foreign Office has listed fuel rationing since 15 March 2026, with quotas and pump access by license plate. It can affect transfers, so ask your driver or provider how they plan the day.

Is Hambantota a good base for Yala?
It works if you want a quieter coast and a bigger town. A local safari provider puts the drive from the port to Yala at about 90 minutes, and the port operator lists 62.8 km and 1 hour. Tissamaharama is the usual base because it has the hotels and services for Yala, and Kirinda has hotels close to the park entrances. See where to stay.
Do I need an ETA for Sri Lanka?
Yes, you still apply before you travel. Since 25 May 2026 the tourist ETA is fee-free for 30 days for citizens of 40 listed countries. Other nationalities pay fees. Check your own nationality on the government ETA page. The UK government advises British travelers to hold a passport valid for at least 6 months from arrival.
Will I see a leopard in Yala?
Nobody can promise it. Operators exclude sighting guarantees in their terms, and animals, weather and chance shape every drive. Read the leopard page before you set expectations.
Is Yala open right now?
Day visits were announced to resume on 16 October 2026 after the partial closure from 14 September to 15 October. Conditions can change, so confirm with your provider the day before you go. The Yala page lists the dates.
How far is the port from the parks?
The port operator lists about 62.8 km to Yala and 24.6 km (29 minutes) to Bundala. For Udawalawe a route planner estimates 64.1 km and 1 hour 43 minutes from Hambantota. These are estimates, not timetables.
Is hambantota.org an official website?
No. This is an independent travel guide with no link to the municipal council, the district office, the tourism authority, the wildlife department, the port or any tour operator.
