Best time to visit Yala and Hambantota: the short answer
Hambantota sits in the drier southeast of Sri Lanka. Temperatures stay in a narrow band all year, with average daily highs between about 29.6 and 31.2 °C. What changes is rain, the sea, and which parts of the national parks are open. Use the island-wide weather you may have read about with care, because the southeast does not behave like the whole country.
This is an independent guide. The climate figures below come from an older official table, so they show a pattern, not a forecast. Climatic dry spells, bird seasons and official closures are three different things.

Sri Lanka weather in Hambantota by month
Monthly averages from the Hambantota station, in an official report of 2003.
| Month | Average high (°C) | Average low (°C) | Average rain (mm) |
|---|---|---|---|
| January | 29.8 | 22.8 | 80.3 |
| February | 30.2 | 23.0 | 53.1 |
| March | 30.9 | 23.9 | 60.0 |
| April | 31.2 | 25.0 | 90.2 |
| May | 30.7 | 25.5 | 81.0 |
| June | 30.3 | 25.2 | 57.0 |
| July | 30.6 | 24.7 | 47.4 |
| August | 30.1 | 24.6 | 51.1 |
| September | 29.9 | 24.5 | 68.8 |
| October | 30.0 | 24.2 | 131.7 |
| November | 29.8 | 23.6 | 191.7 |
| December | 29.6 | 23.3 | 115.4 |
Highs and lows are mean daily values for each month, not record extremes. Rain is the mean monthly total. The temperatures cover 1961 to 1990 and the rainfall 1951 to 2000, so the table is dated and is no forecast for 2026. Rain is higher from October to December and lower in July and August. That does not mean fine weather every day, and it says nothing about the sea.

Yala in 2026: the dated closure
In autumn 2026 a drought-related partial closure ran from 14 September to 15 October. Reports of 13 October said day visitors would return from 16 October, and an operator confirmed the reopening in an update that day. The press named the affected parts as blocks 1 and 2, while another outlet wrote zones 1 and 1A. Both gave the same date.
Press reports also say reservations for park lodges and campsites become available again from 1 November 2026. That is separate from day visits.
Do not read this as a yearly closed season. Only the 2026 dates are on record. Check the current status before you book a Yala trip in any other year. The Yala guide lists blocks and gates.
One operator describes a daily pause from 12:00 to 14:00, including on full-day tours. Treat that as the operator's rule, not a rule for every visitor.

Which season for what?
Matching your interest to the calendar.
Leopards and big game
No month has been shown to be the best for leopards, and no sighting is guaranteed in any month. Pick your dates around the park status, the rain and your own calendar. See the leopard guide.
Birds at Bundala
A tourism page names September to March for migratory birds and describes large flocks of flamingos. That is a general, undated description. No flamingo numbers can be promised for autumn 2026. Read the Bundala guide.
Turtles at Rekawa
One project page gives February to July as the main nesting time. A resort guide gives April to September. The two ranges overlap from April to July, but do not treat any month as certain. See Tangalle.
The Kataragama festival
The tourism authority describes a festival of about two weeks in July or August, with evening processions. For 2026 one calendar lists the flag hoisting on 15 July, the fire ceremony on 26 July, the Maha Perahera on 29 July and the water cutting on 30 July. Dates move with the lunar calendar, so do not carry them to other years. See Kataragama.
Swimming and the sea
In the general seasonal model, the southwest monsoon runs from May to September. Low rain in Hambantota does not mean calm water. See the beaches page.
Rain and floods in the inter-monsoon months
What the travel advice says for autumn 2026.
The UK Foreign Office changed its Sri Lanka advice on 21 September 2026. Inter-monsoon rain raises the risk of flooding and landslides across the country, and traffic and supplies can be disrupted. The page carries no blanket warning against travel to Hambantota. Cyclone Ditwah in 2025 caused severe damage across the island, according to the disaster agency, but that is no reason to cancel a trip without a current source. Check the latest advice just before you leave. Read the safety page for the full list of official notes.
