Hambantota Port at a glance

The port lies on the south coast of Sri Lanka, in the Southern Province. It was inaugurated in 2010, according to the Sri Lanka Ports Authority chronicle, under the name Magampura Mahinda Rajapaksa Port, also written Magam Ruhunupura Mahinda Rajapaksa Port. Today it is run by Hambantota International Port Group, a commercial operator.

This page describes the port as a place and a transport hub for visitors. It does not take a side in any political debate. If you arrive by ship, the practical pages are shore excursions from Hambantota and the guides to Yala and Bundala.

History in brief

Opening and operator are two separate dates.

2010: inauguration

The ports authority chronicle places the ceremonial opening of the port in 2010. That date should not be mixed up with the start of the present operating company.

2017: operating agreement

The operator's timeline records a shareholder agreement between China Merchants Port Holdings and the Sri Lanka Ports Authority on 9 December 2017. It describes a lease or concession of 99 years to develop, manage and operate the port area.

Today: commercial operation

Read the arrangement as a commercial concession. The operator's timeline ends in 2020, so it does not tell you the current shareholding.

A name that repeats

The word Magam Ruhunupura also appears in the name of a conference hall in town. It is a different building from the port.

Our pick: a safari that starts at the port

Our take: this Yala jeep trip is collected at gate 2 of the port and brought back there, which keeps a ship day simple.

Cruise calls

The port lists a dedicated berth for cruise ships. Two calls are documented by the port itself:

  • 3 December 2025: Mein Schiff 6 made its maiden visit, with 2,289 passengers according to the port. The report is dated 14 December 2025.
  • 12 February 2026: AIDAdiva called for the first time. The port describes it as the second visit by AIDA Cruises overall, in a report dated 26 February 2026.

A line's future schedule is not a confirmed call. Ask your cruise line which date and berth apply to your sailing.

Can you walk around the port?

Not freely. The operating area follows a regulated entry procedure that reflects port and ISPS security requirements, so it is not an open promenade. Ask your ship or your tour operator how you leave the port area, whether a shuttle runs and where your pickup waits.

Most visitors come for what lies beyond the gate. The table gives distances from the port as published by the operator.

Yala National Park62.8 km, about 1 hourPort operator. A local safari company plans about 90 minutes

The two Yala figures disagree, so allow the longer one. These are estimates for road travel and not a timetable. Details for planning a ship day are in the shore excursions guide.

The city around the port

The Hambantota Municipal Council area had 26,351 residents in the 2024 census, 12,982 men and 13,369 women. The wider district had about 671,400 residents. These are different areas, so do not use the district figure for the town.

Salt is made nearby. Lanka Salt names Mahalewaya as its main saltern, with Palatupana and Bundala as further sites. The salt is produced by evaporating seawater with the help of sun and wind. That does not mean the salt pans are open to visitors.

Hambantota lies at the start of the coast road to Tangalle and the beaches. The port operator calls parts of Tangalle beach calm because of the reef, but UK government advice warns of dangerous surf and rip currents at many Sri Lankan beaches at certain times of year. Ask locally before you swim, see the beaches guide.

Before you arrive

  • Entry rules: a tourist ETA is free for 30 days for citizens of 40 listed countries, including Germany, Austria, Switzerland, the UK and the USA, since 25 May 2026. The ETA has not been abolished. Ask your cruise line how it applies to a port visit.
  • Heat and rain: read the best time to visit page. UK advice dated 21 September 2026 mentions heavy rainfall and landslide risk.
  • Roads: German government advice discourages self-drive rental cars and mentions fuel rationing since 15 March 2026.
