Getting to Hambantota: the short version
Hambantota is on the south coast of Sri Lanka, in the Southern Province. There is no train all the way to the town and no flight schedule this guide can promise from Mattala. For most trips the working plan is a road transfer, either by car with a driver or by bus.
This is an independent guide. Timetables, tolls and flight schedules change, so use the figures below to plan, then check the current timetable before you go.

Your options compared
What is confirmed for each way of arriving.
| Route | What to know | Check before you go |

| Southern Expressway | Extended beyond Matara toward Hambantota and Mattala in February 2020 | Toll for your vehicle class |
| Train to Beliatta | Colombo Fort to Beliatta is a listed reservation route | Current timetable; how you get onward |

Our pick: a safari with pick-up included
Our take: pick-up and drop-off from the port or a Hambantota hotel are part of the price, so you do not arrange the road leg yourself.

Mattala Rajapaksa International Airport
Mattala airport serves the Hambantota area. Whether regular flights serve it in 2026 is something you must confirm yourself. Do not build a trip around a Mattala flight until an airline has confirmed it for your date. Airlines, operating days, frequencies and transfer options can all change.
The airport authority runs a flight information page for Mattala. Look there first, then confirm with the airline.
The safe default is the main airport serving Colombo, followed by a transfer by road. If you do land at Mattala, arrange a pickup in advance.
Expressway, train and bus
Older guides still say the expressway ends at Matara.
The Southern Expressway (E01)
An official report of 24 February 2020 describes the extension south of Matara, opened the day before, with a link toward Hambantota and Mattala. Guides that say the expressway ends at Matara are out of date. The road authority publishes a toll matrix by vehicle class. Toll amounts for a private car or van in 2026 are not given here, so check the table or ask your driver.
Train
Sri Lanka Railways lists Colombo Fort to Beliatta as a reservation route. That makes Beliatta your rail destination, not Hambantota. A planned extension from Beliatta toward Hambantota and Kataragama appears on a railway page last changed in 2016, and a plan is not a running service. There is no direct train to Yala.
Booking a train seat
The railway FAQ says online booking opens 30 days ahead and closes 2 hours before departure. You need an account, can reserve up to 5 seats in one go, and pay a 5 percent convenience fee. An e-ticket or a printout works. Reservation is not required for every train. A revised timetable took effect on 3 December 2025, so use the current one.
Bus
Buses run along the south coast. Route numbers, departure times and fares change, and older timetables should not be trusted for 2026. Check the current timetable and fare for your route. Ask locally how to get from Beliatta or Matara to your final stop.

Entry rules: the ETA in 2026
The fee changed. The requirement did not.
Free for 40 countries
Since 25 May 2026 the tourist ETA for up to 30 days is free for citizens of 40 listed countries, including Germany, Austria, Switzerland, the UK and the USA. That is not an abolition of the ETA. You still apply before you travel.
Children and other nationalities
Children of any nationality under 12 get a tourist ETA for up to 30 days at no charge. For some South Asian nationalities the tourist ETA is listed at USD 20 when applied for in advance and USD 25 on arrival. Other nationalities not on the free list are listed at USD 50 and USD 60. Look up your own nationality first.
Documents
The UK Foreign Office advises an online ETA before departure and at least 6 months of passport validity from arrival. The ETA terms ask for a return ticket and enough funds. Fees paid before 25 May 2026 are not refunded.
Fuel, roads and self-driving
Two notes that affect your transfer.
The German Foreign Office has described fuel rationing since 15 March 2026, with registration, quotas and pump access by even or odd plate numbers. That can affect transfers, so ask your driver or hotel before a long trip. It also advises against self-drive rental cars and refers to serious bus accidents. After an accident, investigations can take long and exit bans are possible. See the safety page.
