Where to stay near Yala: the short version

Most visitors sleep outside the national park and drive in for a morning or afternoon safari. That makes transfer time the main question. One operator lists hotel pickup at 5:30 a.m. for a morning drive, so every extra half hour of road moves your alarm earlier.

Four bases come up again and again: Tissamaharama, the coast at Kirinda and Palatupana, the Hambantota and Ambalantota area, and Tangalle. This is an independent guide and it lists no room rates. Prices change, so check them with the hotel.

Our take: hotel or port pick-up is included, which helps if your base is on the Hambantota side where the drive to Yala is longer.

The bases in detail

Pick by what you plan to do, not by the name of the hotel.

Tissamaharama

The cultural heritage authority describes Tissamaharama as the historic centre of the Ruhuna kingdom and today a base for Yala, with accommodation and visitor services. Whether a given hotel reaches your gate early is a question for the hotel. Ask about the Palatupana, Katagamuwa and Galge entrances separately. Read the Tissamaharama guide.

Kirinda and Palatupana

One coastal hotel gives its address as Palatupana, Yala, Kirinda. That shows a coastal alternative close to the park entrances. The name of a hotel with Yala in it does not put it inside the national park boundary. See the beaches page for the shore here.

Hambantota and Ambalantota

A resort in this area lists its address as Sittarakala Estate, Chithragala, Ambalantota. It is not in the centre of Tissamaharama or at a Yala gate. The same resort states 269 km and about 3 hours 25 minutes from the Colombo airport. This area suits Bundala, Ussangoda and the port. Read the Bundala guide.

Tangalle

A Tangalle resort offers excursions to Yala and Udawalawe and puts each at roughly 110 minutes from the property. That works if the beach is your main aim and the safari is one day. For several drives, move closer. See Tangalle.

Park lodges and camping

Staying inside Yala is a separate matter from a day safari. Press reports say reservations for the park's lodges and campsites become available again from 1 November 2026, after the partial closure that ended on 15 October. A day permit, a booked safari and a night's reservation are three different things.

Do not assume you can camp wherever you like. Nightly rates for park camping, available pitches and rules for moving at night should be confirmed with the park authority or your booking channel. Tents and lodges just outside the boundary are not camping in the national park, however they are named.

How to choose

A short checklist.

Count your safari days

One safari fits any base. Two or three drives call for Tissamaharama or Kirinda.

Ask which gate

Ask for the transfer time to the gate your tour uses, not to Yala in general.

Check the date

Part of Yala was closed from 14 September to 15 October 2026. Confirm what is open when you book. See the best time page.

Ask what the price covers

A national park visit needs a permit issued under the wildlife department, and a paid jeep does not replace it. Some offers include the permit and others list it as extra, so ask before you compare two prices. The Yala safari page shows how the costs add up.

Ask about pickup times

The morning drive and the afternoon drive start at different hours. One operator lists hotel pickup at 5:30 a.m. and at about 13:00. Ask your hotel whether it arranges an early breakfast or a packed one.

Plan the arrival

Allow a long road transfer from the Colombo airport. See getting there.

Hotels near Yala: frequently asked questions

Is it better to stay in Tissa, Kirinda or Hambantota?

Tissamaharama has the services, Kirinda is nearer the Palatupana entrance, and Hambantota or Ambalantota suits resort stays and Bundala. Ask each hotel for the transfer time to your gate.

Are there hotels inside Yala National Park?

Hotels with Yala in the name sit outside the boundary. The park runs its own lodges and campsites, and press reports say reservations return from 1 November 2026.

How early is a safari pickup?

One operator lists hotel pickup at 5:30 a.m. for a morning drive and about 13:00 for the afternoon one, with entry around 13:30. These are one operator's times, not park hours.

Can I stay in Tangalle and do Yala as a day trip?

Yes. A resort guide estimates about 110 minutes each way. It is a long day, so choose a base nearer the gates for more than one drive.

Can I camp in the park?

Park campsites are listed as available again from 1 November 2026, according to press reports. Rates and rules must be confirmed with the park authority. Luxury tents outside the boundary are not camping in the park.
