How a Yala jeep safari works
Most visitors see Yala from a jeep with a driver, in a half-day or full-day drive. The jeep, the park permit and your pickup are three different items, and a listing can include all, two or only one of them. Leopards are the draw for many people, but elephants, sloth bears and crocodiles are also named as possible, and no listing can promise a particular animal.
This page explains the choices and shows example prices from providers' pages in 2026. It is an independent guide and does not sell tours. For the park itself, including blocks, entrances and the closure of autumn 2026, read the Yala National Park page.

Half day or full day
What changes, and what to ask.
| Half day | Full day | |
|---|---|---|
| Typical use | A shorter drive, in the morning or the afternoon | A longer program; check the break, meals and tracker |
| Example pickup | 5:30 a.m. for the morning, or about 1:00 p.m. for the afternoon | Set by the provider |
| Jeep hire, Palatupana gate | LKR 14,900 | LKR 28,900 |
| Jeep hire, Katagamuwa or Galge gate | LKR 19,900 | LKR 33,900 |
| Jeep hire, Block I (second listing) | LKR 21,450 | LKR 31,350 |
| Jeep hire, Galge (second listing) | LKR 23,100 | LKR 32,900 |
The first three rows of prices come from one provider in August 2026 and the last two from another in September 2026. Both are for up to 6 guests, and neither is the full cost: the park charges come on top and the second listing states that tickets are excluded. Duration, midday break, pickup radius, meals and tracker vary by listing, and one provider notes that length depends on weather and route.

A safari day, step by step
Times are provider examples, not park rules.
Early pickup
A morning drive starts with hotel pickup at about 5:30 a.m. in one listing. The park opens at 6 a.m. by an information portal, and your jeep enters through the gate that was agreed.
The drive
The jeep follows marked routes inside the block that is open for your tour. Block I is the main area of many regular day safaris from Palatupana. Other blocks have more limited access.
The midday pause
One provider describes a daily pause from 12:00 to 2:00 p.m., also on full-day tours. It is a provider statement, so ask what your program does in those hours.
The afternoon drive
An afternoon safari is listed with pickup around 1:00 p.m. and park entry around 1:30 p.m. The park frame ends at 6 p.m.
Rules on the track
Guidance for safari vehicles, which the driver follows and you should too.
Stay on routes
Vehicles use designated routes, follow one-way and parking rules and give animals right of way. They stop when animals cross.
Speed
The guideline sets a maximum of 30 km/h or a lower value fixed for wildlife protection. An operator's terms list 25 km/h. Follow the lower figure you are given on the day.
No feeding, no litter
Do not feed animals, and take your waste out with you. The guideline sets no fixed minimum distance or jeep limit per animal, but it asks drivers not to disturb animals through excessive vehicle numbers.
Registration and permit
A safari vehicle must be registered with the wildlife department and carry a valid entry permit. A booked jeep does not replace your own park permit.
Booking the permit
The park charge is its own cost.
The wildlife department publishes a guide to its ePermit service for day visitors. The form asks for the date and park, the group members including driver and guide, and the vehicle details, and it gives a QR payment receipt. You can book it yourself online, or your provider can arrange it for you. Fee examples of 2026 vary between providers, from USD 25 per foreign adult plus USD 10 per jeep service charge in one listing, to LKR 26,500 for two adults plus LKR 400 service charge in another, each with 18 percent VAT. See the Yala page for the table and the caveats.
Leopard-minded visitors should also read Leopards in Yala before booking, so expectations match what a drive can deliver. If you arrive by cruise ship, shore excursions explains the port timing.

Yala safari: frequently asked questions
How much does a Yala jeep cost?
Example hire prices in 2026 range from LKR 14,900 for a half day at the Palatupana gate to LKR 33,900 for a full day at Katagamuwa or Galge in one listing, and LKR 21,450 to LKR 31,350 for Block I in another. Park charges are separate.
What time does a safari start?
One provider lists hotel pickup at 5:30 a.m. for the morning drive and about 1:00 p.m. for the afternoon. The park itself is listed as open from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Is a half day enough?
It gives one drive. A full day adds a second drive and a break, and the right choice depends on how much time and money you want to spend. Neither can promise an animal.
Can I drive myself in Yala?
Safari vehicles need a registration with the wildlife department and a valid entry permit. Most visitors use a registered jeep with a driver. The German Foreign Office also advises against self-drive rentals in Sri Lanka.
Is Yala safari open now?
Day visits were announced to resume on 16 October 2026 after the partial closure from 14 September to 15 October. Confirm with your provider the day before.
