Twelve things to do around Hambantota

The south of Sri Lanka packs safari parks, Buddhist and Hindu sites and a long coast into a small area. The list below is an editorial selection of twelve experiences, not a quality ranking, and it does not promise that you can do all of them in a day. Most need a half day or a full day, and several start very early or very late.

Where a price or hour appears, it is as published by the operator or by a tourism source in 2026 or earlier, and it can change. Park permits, jeep hire and temple visits are separate costs. Allow for the dress code at sacred places: shoulders covered, trousers and skirts below the knee.

62.8 kmPort to Yala, 1 hour by the port operator's estimate, 90 minutes by a local safari provider
24.6 kmPort to Bundala, about 29 minutes by the port operator's estimate

Wildlife and wetlands

Experiences one to three need a park permit and a vehicle.

1. Yala safari

A day visit in a block that is open for your tour. The park permit from the wildlife department is separate from the jeep, and a paid jeep does not replace it. Day visits resumed on 16 October 2026 after a partial closure that began on 14 September. No animal is guaranteed.

Yala safari โ†’

2. Bundala

Coastal wetlands with four brackish lagoons, dunes and dry forest, and the core zone of a UNESCO biosphere reserve. The tourism board lists September to March for migratory birds. Flamingos are possible, not reliable. A 2025 price table lists USD 12 for foreign adults, based on the 2022 gazette.

Bundala โ†’

3. Udawalawe

A wildlife park built around elephant watching, with no promise of sightings. A provider report lists USD 25 for foreign adults and USD 10 per jeep as a service charge, plus 18 percent VAT, as of June 2026. The Elephant Transit Home cares for orphaned calves and has its own entry fee.

Udawalawe โ†’

4. Tissa Wewa

A historic irrigation reservoir at Tissamaharama that still waters the surrounding rice fields. It is not the reservoir of the same name at Anuradhapura. Combine it with the stupas below and use it as a first stop in the town that serves as a base for Yala.

5. Tissa Maha Dagoba and Yatala

The great white dagoba of Tissamaharama has been rebuilt and enlarged many times. The heritage listing gives about 50 m in height and more than 165 m around the base. Yatala Wehera is another old stupa about 2 km from the town center, with excavated remains.

Stupas โ†’

6. Sithulpawwa

A monastery site in the Yala area, 24 km from Tissamaharama along the road to Sithulpawwa. It has rock shelters with early Brahmi inscriptions. Check the current road and access conditions before you go.

Yala area โ†’

7. Kataragama

A pilgrimage site for Buddhists and Hindus that Muslims and Christians also visit. The main shrine is dedicated to the god Skanda, and the Kiri Vehera stupa is about 800 m to the north. Daily puja times of 4:30 a.m., 10:30 a.m. and 6:30 p.m. are listed. The Esala festival of 2026 ran from 15 July to 30 July.

Kataragama โ†’

8. Mulkirigala

An active rock monastery with painted caves and statues, inland from Tangalle. A hotel guide gives 18 km and 25 minutes from its resort at Tangalle, not from Hambantota town. Check the entry fee and hours on arrival.

Tangalle โ†’

Parks, turtles and red earth

Two managed attractions, a night on the beach and a plateau on the coast.

9. Ridiyagama Safari Park

A zoological safari park with introduced species, run by the national zoo department. It is not a wildlife safari like Yala. It lists daily hours of 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Foreign adults pay USD 17.70 and children USD 8.85, payable in rupees only. An online ticket service exists.

10. Birds Park

A separate bird park with its own website and published prices: LKR 5,000 for foreign adults, LKR 2,500 for children aged 3 to 10, and free under 3. It is a private attraction, not a national park.

11. Rekawa turtle watch

A guided night walk to watch turtles lay eggs, if they come. One project lists a start at 8:30 p.m. with arrival by 9:00 p.m., another lists 8:00 p.m. Waits of 1 to 2 hours or more are normal, and fees are listed from LKR 1,000 to LKR 2,000 for foreign adults depending on the project page. No flash and no white or yellow torches.

12. Ussangoda

A reddish coastal plateau and protected area near Ambalantota, with red soil and a grassy cliff above the beach. The meteorite story told about it is a story, not geological proof. Ask locally about access before you drive out.

A sensible day combines one park with one nearby site. Yala and Tissamaharama fit together, and so do Mulkirigala and Rekawa from a Tangalle base. For a deeper look at the main park, see the Yala National Park page.

Things to do in Hambantota: frequently asked questions

Is this list a ranking?

No. It is a selection of twelve experiences across wildlife, sacred sites and the coast. Which one suits you depends on your base, your season and how early you can start.

Can I do several of these in one day?

Usually one park plus one nearby site is enough. Safari days start early, and Rekawa starts in the evening. Do not plan a full Yala day and a late turtle walk without a rest.

Do I need to book anything in advance?

Park permits can be arranged online through the wildlife department's ePermit service. Jeeps, guides and evening visits are easier to arrange early, especially around holidays. Check the current rules with your provider.

Do temples and smaller sites charge entry?

Ask at the entrance and carry some cash in rupees. The parks, Ridiyagama, Birds Park and the turtle watch charge admission, and the amounts above are those listed in 2026 or earlier.

What should I wear at temples?

Cover your shoulders, and wear trousers or skirts that reach below the knee. This applies to Kataragama, the stupas and rock monasteries alike.
