Hambantota tours: five types, one set of questions
Tours from Hambantota fall into a few groups: a jeep safari in Yala, a wetland and bird trip to Bundala, an elephant safari in Udawalawe, a visit to the zoological park at Ridiyagama and an evening turtle walk at Rekawa. Cruise passengers add a sixth type, the shore excursion from the port. Each has its own gate, its own timing and its own list of what the price covers.
This page does not rank tour operators and does not give a full market price list. The numbers below are examples from provider pages in 2026, shown so you can judge an offer. The government park permit and a paid jeep are separate things, and a package that looks cheap may leave the permit out.

Tour types compared
What each one is for and what to check.
| Type | What you do | Check before booking |
|---|---|---|
| Yala jeep safari | Wildlife drive, with leopard interest and elephants, sloth bears and crocodiles listed as possible | Gate, block, half or full day, whether park tickets are included |
| Bundala | Wetlands and birds, a shorter drive from the port | Season for migratory birds, ticket price date |
| Udawalawe | Elephant safari | Whether the Elephant Transit Home is part of the day |
| Ridiyagama Safari Park | Zoological park with introduced species | Payment in rupees only, hours of 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. |
| Rekawa turtle watch | Evening guided walk on a nesting beach | Start time, waiting time, no sighting guarantee |
| Shore excursion | Safari or sights between ship arrival and all-aboard time | Meeting point, time buffer, return to the ship |
No source ranks the parks by sighting chances, and no reliable success rate exists. Pick the park for the kind of animal or scenery you care about. The Yala safari page explains the jeep options in detail.

Two providers' listings for Yala, to show how far offers differ.
| Listing | Half day | Full day | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Provider A, Palatupana gate, August 2026 | LKR 14,900 | LKR 28,900 | Private jeep, up to 6 guests; jeep hire only |
| Provider A, Katagamuwa or Galge gate | LKR 19,900 | LKR 33,900 | Same terms |
| Provider B, Block I, September 2026 | LKR 21,450 | LKR 31,350 | Tickets excluded, up to 6 people |
| Provider B, Galge | LKR 23,100 | LKR 32,900 | Tickets excluded |
These are hire prices, not official tariffs, and not the full cost of a visit. The park entry comes on top, and the two providers also report different government add-on charges. The Yala National Park page sets out the fee parts and the range the sources give.
What to check in any listing
Descriptions differ. These points decide whether an offer is good value.
Park permit
Find out whether the park permit is included or charged at the gate. A permit from the wildlife department is required for a national park, and a paid jeep does not replace it.
Gate and block
Yala has several entrances and blocks, and which one your jeep uses changes the price and the day. Block I is the main area of many regular day safaris. Access to other blocks is more limited.
Private or shared
Listings say private for up to 6 guests, but some do not make clear whether the jeep is shared. Ask who else is in the vehicle.
Pickup and duration
Providers state hotel pickup at 5:30 a.m. for a morning drive, and about 1:00 p.m. for an afternoon drive that enters the park around 1:30 p.m. Duration depends on weather and route, so a half day is not a fixed number of hours.
Meals, drinks and extras
Some listings include water, snacks, binoculars or a picnic, others list none. Compare what is stated, not the headline price.
Terms on sightings
An operator can exclude any promise of wildlife sightings in its terms. Treat a listing that guarantees a leopard with doubt.
Leopards in Yala โTour or arrange it yourself?
The honest trade-offs.
Pros of a tour
One booking covers jeep, driver and often pickup. You do not need to understand the gate and block system before arriving, and a driver who knows the tracks helps.
Cons of a tour
Pickup and timing are set, and the headline price may leave out the park tickets, which are a large part of the cost.
Pros of arranging it yourself
You pick the gate, the day and the pace, and you pay each part separately. The wildlife department offers an ePermit service for day visitors.
Cons of arranging it yourself
You deal with the permit, the vehicle registration rules and the early start on your own. Safari vehicles need a registration and a valid entry permit.

Hambantota tours: frequently asked questions
Are park tickets included in a jeep price?
Not always. One provider lists tickets as excluded, and another lists only the jeep hire. Read the description, because the park charges are a separate bill.
How many people fit in a jeep?
Two providers list a maximum of 6 guests for a private jeep. Check that the number includes children.
What is the difference between half day and full day?
The hire price differs, for example LKR 14,900 and LKR 28,900 in one August 2026 listing for the Palatupana gate. Duration, midday break, pickup radius and meals vary by listing, and one provider notes that length depends on weather and route.
Can I book Yala without a tour operator?
You can arrange the permit through the wildlife department's ePermit service and hire a registered vehicle. The permit needs the date, park, group members including driver and guide, and vehicle details.
Is a leopard guaranteed on a Yala tour?
No. Operators exclude sighting promises in their terms. See Leopards in Yala for what affects a drive.
